Bangladesh HC Rules in Favor of Tamim Iqbal’s BCB Committee

Dev Mishra · · 4 min read

In a significant legal victory for cricket administration in Bangladesh, the High Court has cleared the way for the Tamim Iqbal-led ad hoc committee of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to continue its operations. On May 21, the High Court dismissed a writ petition that sought to dissolve the temporary governing body, finding no valid grounds or strong evidence against its current functioning. This landmark ruling ensures that the upcoming BCB elections, scheduled for June 7, 2026, can proceed without any legal interruptions, securing a smooth transition for the nation’s cricket administration.

The High Court’s Landmark Decision

The legal challenge against the ad hoc committee was heard by a division bench consisting of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice AFM Saiful Karim. After reviewing the petition, the bench dropped the writ from its cause list, citing a lack of merit in issuing an order against the interim governing body. As reported by The Daily Star, the court clarified that while this specific petition was dropped due to a lack of merit, the petitioners remain free to present their case before an alternative bench if they choose to do so. However, this decision effectively removes the immediate threat of dissolution, providing the Tamim Iqbal-led administration with the legal backing required to execute its responsibilities.

Origins of the Tamim Iqbal-Led Ad Hoc Committee

The 11-member ad hoc committee was established by the National Sports Council (NSC) on April 7, 2026. This decisive step was taken following the dissolution of the previous elected BCB board, which had faced severe allegations of election irregularities concerning Aminul Islam Bulbul. To restore integrity and stability to the board, former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal was appointed as the president of this temporary committee.

Alongside Tamim Iqbal, the panel comprises a diverse group of prominent sports administrators, legal experts, business leaders, and legendary former cricketers. Key members of this committee include Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Athar Ali Khan, alongside several former BCB directors. Immediately upon its formation, the committee actively began restructuring the BCB’s internal departments, assigning dedicated members to oversee critical sectors such as women’s cricket, facilities management, and grassroots game development.

Understanding the Legal Challenge

The legal dispute began when a petition was filed challenging the very legality of the NSC’s April 7 decision to form the ad hoc committee. The petitioners argued that the creation of the committee, along with all administrative decisions made under its tenure, should be declared unlawful and void. Furthermore, the petition sought an interim stay order to immediately halt all operations of the panel until a final judicial verdict could be reached.

The case named several high-profile entities as respondents, highlighting the high stakes of the dispute. Respondents included representatives from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Sports Council, the Bangladesh Cricket Board itself, the BCB Election Commission, and the Chief Executive Officer of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Despite these challenges, the High Court’s refusal to halt the committee’s activities has validated the interim structure’s authority.

The Road to the June 7 BCB Elections

With the legal hurdles cleared, the focus now shifts entirely to the highly anticipated BCB elections scheduled for June 7, 2026. This election is set to completely overhaul the leadership landscape of Bangladesh cricket, establishing a long-term administrative structure. The election process is highly structured and will involve 184 registered councillors voting to elect 23 directors. Once these directors are elected, they, along with two government-appointed directors, will form a 25-member board that will vote to elect the next BCB president for a four-year term. Tamim Iqbal is widely expected to participate in this election while continuing to oversee the current transitional phase.

The election of the 23 directors will be categorized into three distinct brackets to ensure fair representation:

  • Category 1: Ten directors will be elected from regional and district cricket associations across Bangladesh.
  • Category 2: Twelve directors will represent the highly competitive Dhaka-based cricket clubs.
  • Category 3: One director will be chosen from a specialized category composed of former Bangladesh national captains, veteran cricketers, representatives from security forces, and nominees from the National Sports Council.

Official BCB Election Schedule

The roadmap for the election has been meticulously planned and finalized by a three-member Election Commission, headed by senior advocate Ahsanul Karim. The key milestones of the election timeline are structured as follows:

  • May 19: Publication of the finalized voter list.
  • May 20-21: Distribution of nomination papers to prospective candidates.
  • May 21-22: Official submission of completed nomination forms.
  • May 25: Official announcement of the final candidate list following scheduled hearings.
  • June 6: Deadline for the submission of postal and electronic ballots, with the final results expected to be announced later that evening.
  • June 7, 2026: The main election day, determining the future of Bangladesh cricket administration.

This systematic process ensures transparency and democratic representation, paving the way for a stable and prosperous future for the Bangladesh Cricket Board under legally recognized leadership.
