MS Dhoni’s IPL Future: CSK Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad Addresses Speculation After 2026 Elimination

Nikhil Joshi · · 5 min read

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season will be remembered by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans for many reasons, not least for the conspicuous absence of their talismanic leader, MS Dhoni. Throughout the tournament, speculation swirled around Dhoni’s fitness and his potential return, making him the talk of the town even from the sidelines. For the first time in their storied history, the five-time champions played an entire season without the services of the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman, a void that was keenly felt as they ultimately failed to qualify for the playoffs.

MS Dhoni’s absence was attributed to a series of unfortunate injuries. Initially, a calf injury kept him out of action, which was then compounded by a thumb injury. These recent setbacks were in addition to a long-standing knee issue that has reportedly bothered him for some time. The cumulative effect of these injuries meant that one of cricket’s most iconic figures could not contribute on the field, leaving a massive leadership and batting gap in the CSK lineup.

CSK’s Playoff Dreams Shattered by Gujarat Titans

The final league match for CSK proved to be a do-or-die encounter against the Gujarat Titans, a formidable opponent. The Titans posted a colossal total of 229/4 in their allotted overs, showcasing a dominant batting display that left CSK with a monumental chase. Their comprehensive dominance in this crucial fixture put immense pressure on the Chennai batters.

Chasing 230 against a potent GT bowling attack was always going to be a challenging task, but the Chennai batters arguably made it unnecessarily difficult for themselves. Mohammad Siraj delivered a devastating opening spell, dismantling CSK’s top order by removing key mainstays such as Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Urvil Patel in quick succession. While Shivam Dube attempted to mount a lone resistance, playing a valiant hand, his efforts were ultimately isolated. The formidable duo of Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khan then systematically swept through the rest of the batting lineup, ensuring there would be no late resurgence.

Eventually, Chennai lost their final league match by a significant margin of 89 runs, a defeat that sealed their fate and made them the third team to be eliminated from the season. This result marked a disappointing end to a campaign that had promised much but ultimately fell short.

Ruturaj Gaikwad on MS Dhoni’s IPL Future and CSK’s Transition

Following the disheartening defeat that ended CSK’s IPL 2026 journey, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad faced the inevitable questions regarding MS Dhoni’s availability for the next IPL season. Gaikwad, choosing to play it safe, did not offer a definitive answer to the ‘million-dollar question’ that weighs heavily on every CSK fan’s mind. However, he unequivocally acknowledged Dhoni’s immense value and the significant void his absence created.

“You and I’ll get to know it next year. It’s a hard miss for us. He (MS Dhoni) can come in those late overs and change the game just by staying in the crease. Never know about next season but really happy with the guys we have,” Ruturaj Gaikwad stated during the post-match presentation, reflecting on Dhoni’s unique ability to influence games with minimal time at the crease. This comment highlighted the irreplaceable impact of Dhoni’s presence, even if his role might have been limited to a few crucial overs.

While praising Dhoni, Gaikwad also subtly hinted at the ongoing transition within the CSK squad. He directly addressed the perception of the five-time winners, emphasizing that the team is indeed moving forward, albeit with a deep respect for its veterans. “Not many people buy the fact that we are a young team in transition, with a lot of inexperienced players. More than 8-10 players have played less than 20 games, they’ve gotten exposure, we’ve found out what areas we’re lacking. We still got six away wins, proud of the unit,” Gaikwad elaborated. His comments underscored the management’s long-term vision and the belief in nurturing a new core of players, even as the shadow of a legend like Dhoni looms large.

Injuries Made IPL 2026 a Tricky Season for CSK

Chennai Super Kings entered the IPL 2026 season with what was perceived as a relatively weaker bowling department. The team’s strategy relied heavily on a cohort of younger Indian pacers supported by just two foreign spinners. While it took some time for the team to discover their optimal combination and rhythm, CSK appeared to find some stability by the mid-season point, showing signs of becoming a cohesive unit.

However, just as things began to look promising, the team was hit by a wave of injuries, extending beyond MS Dhoni. The list of sidelined players grew significantly, including important names such as Khaleel Ahmed, Ayush Mhatre, Nathan Ellis, Spencer Johnson, Jamie Overton, and Ramakrishna Ghosh. Such a substantial number of injuries, particularly to key bowlers, inevitably disrupted team balance, forced frequent changes, and put immense pressure on the available resources. The consistent rotation and unavailability of core players made it incredibly challenging for the team to maintain momentum and execute consistent strategies throughout the grueling tournament.

Despite these considerable setbacks and the constant shuffling due to injuries, the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led unit displayed commendable resilience. The team managed to secure six victories during the season, a testament to their fighting spirit and the efforts of the players who stepped up in challenging circumstances. While falling short of the playoffs is undoubtedly a disappointment for a franchise of CSK’s stature, the season also offered valuable exposure to many young and inexperienced players, laying potential groundwork for future campaigns as the team continues its transition phase.
