In the high-stakes world of the Indian Premier League, the environment surrounding a player can be just as influential as their natural talent. According to former cricketer and seasoned IPL campaigner Ambati Rayudu, Ishan Kishan’s current dominance on the field is a direct result of stepping out from the shadow of the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise. After a seven-year stint with the Mumbai side, Kishan’s move to the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) following the 2025 auction has seemingly provided the wicketkeeper-batter with the space needed to evolve into a more consistent and focused athlete.

The Challenge of the Star-Studded Setup

Rayudu, who himself spent eight years with Mumbai Indians between 2009 and 2017, understands the unique dynamics of the franchise better than most. However, he notes a distinct difference in how players navigate that environment. While Rayudu admits that he personally remained unaffected by the weight of stardom, he recognizes that for a player like Kishan, the pressure was immense.

“Growing up in a franchise like Mumbai, he wants to be a superstar—he is a superstar in his own right now—but back then, to compete against all the stars around him would have been very, very tough,” Rayudu remarked during a recent appearance on ESPNcricinfo Time Out. The veteran explained that seasoned stars possess the innate ability to ‘switch on’ and ‘switch off’ regarding their professional commitments, a skill set that often eludes younger players who are still finding their footing.

Mastering the Mental Game

The transition from a promising youngster to a reliable match-winner involves more than just technique; it requires a psychological shift. Rayudu highlighted that the process of learning to manage the intensity of elite cricket is a difficult one. “Those guys know when to switch on in terms of their game, when to come back. But a lot of these young boys don’t know how to switch off and how to switch on. That’s a big challenge and I’m sure he has learnt and he has learnt it the hard way,” Rayudu added.

Statistically Superior Performance

Kishan’s numbers this season provide empirical evidence to support Rayudu’s observations. Currently sitting fifth on the IPL 2026 Orange Cap list, Kishan has amassed 569 runs in 14 matches, maintaining an impressive average of 40.64 and a blistering strike rate of 178.36. His consistency has reached new heights, highlighted by his recent Player-of-the-Match performance against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where he hammered 79 off 46 deliveries.

This performance marked his sixth 50-plus score of the season—a significant leap from his previous career-best of three such scores in a single campaign. The data suggests that Kishan is not just playing more frequently; he is playing more effectively.

Clarity and Leadership

Rayudu also identified two specific areas where Kishan has shown marked improvement: shot selection and tactical awareness. Early in his career, Kishan was often criticized for poor decision-making under pressure. Today, however, that recklessness has been replaced by calculated aggression. Rayudu attributes this newfound maturity, at least in part, to Kishan’s experiences in leadership roles.

“His shot selection has improved big time,” Rayudu observed. “In his initial years, we have seen him make some wrong decisions in terms of shot selection. But here we saw him making the right call most of the time.” Rayudu further posited that Kishan’s stint as captain for Jharkhand served as a turning point, forcing him to analyze the game from a different perspective. This leadership responsibility provided Kishan with the clarity needed to transform his own batting, turning him into a more composed and formidable force in the T20 format.
