Hasan Mahmud Stars on Debut to Secure Kent Victory
In a thrilling County Championship encounter at Blackpool, Bangladeshi seamer Hasan Mahmud enjoyed a dream debut for Kent, producing career-best innings and match figures to bowl his side to a comprehensive 140-run victory over Lancashire inside three days. Needing a monumental and record-breaking fourth-innings total of 424 runs to win, the home side battled valiantly but was ultimately dismissed for 283. Mahmud was the chief destroyer, finishing with remarkable second-innings figures of 6 for 69 and match figures of 9 for 101.
The Match in Numbers
The final scorecard reflects a dominant overall performance from the visitors, despite some periods of strong resistance from Lancashire:
- Kent: 178 (Ben Dawkins 54; Liam Livingstone 5-55) and 332 (Chris Benjamin 103, Harry Finch 83; James Anderson 3-45, George Balderson 3-65)
- Lancashire: 87 (Jas Singh/Nathan Dudgeon 6-21, Hasan Mahmud 3-32) and 283 (Marcus Harris 91*, Keaton Jennings 61; Hasan Mahmud 6-69)
- Result: Kent won by 140 runs
With this victory, Kent claims a vital 19 points, marking their third win in four matches. Lancashire, on the other hand, collects just three points as they suffer their third defeat in four outings.
Kent Sets the Target on the Third Morning
The third day began with Kent looking to add quick runs to their overnight lead. However, Lancashire’s veteran bowler James Anderson and Tom Bailey quickly wrapped up the visitors’ second innings. They claimed the final two Kent wickets, including that of Chris Benjamin, who fell after a superb knock of 103. Kent’s second innings concluded at 332, setting Lancashire a highly improbable victory target of 424 runs.
Lancashire’s Chase Begins with Early Blows
Lancashire’s second-innings response started much more securely than their disastrous first-innings effort of 87. However, they soon found themselves in trouble against the clinical bowling of Mahmud. Opening batsman Harry Singh was the first to fall, caught at slip by Ben Dawkins off Mahmud’s bowling for 15.
Josh Bohannon joined Marcus Harris and looked intent on playing aggressively, hitting five boundaries off a single loose over from Mahmud. Yet, Mahmud got his revenge shortly after, getting Bohannon caught at slip by Sam Northeast for 26. Harris, meanwhile, adopted an aggressive approach of his own, taking the attack to the Kent spin duo of Matt Parkinson and Bertie Foreman, although not always with complete control. By lunch, Lancashire had reached 89 for 2—two runs more than their entire first-innings total.
The Fightback: Jennings and Harris Build Hope
During the afternoon session, Lancashire briefly threatened to make a serious run at the target. Keaton Jennings and Marcus Harris put together a superb third-wicket partnership, showing composure and application. Both batsmen reached their half-centuries, and the pair added 104 runs together, raising hopes among the home supporters that an improbable, record-breaking chase might actually be achievable.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Kent claimed two crucial wickets in the space of just three deliveries. First, Jennings was caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Chris Benjamin off Mahmud for 61. Almost immediately after, Ben McDermott was run out for a duck. A misunderstanding arose when McDermott was slow to react to a single called by Harris, and Sam Northeast executed a sharp, precise throw to the keeper to leave Lancashire reeling at 162 for 4. By tea, Liam Livingstone had joined Harris to guide Lancashire to 216 without further loss, with Livingstone unbeaten on 38.
The Evening Session: Mahmud Tears Through the Tail
The final session saw the match rapidly head toward its conclusion. Livingstone and Harris added another 17 runs before Kent struck another double blow inside three balls. Livingstone, having progressed to 47, attempted to pull a short delivery from Mahmud but succeeded only in inside-edging the ball onto his stumps. Two balls later, Joe Moores fell for a second-ball duck, caught down the leg side to give Mahmud his five-wicket haul—only the fourth of his first-class career.
The collapse continued as George Balderson became Mahmud’s sixth victim, caught at third slip by Harry Finch for 4. Tom Bailey was then bowled by spin bowler Bertie Foreman for a duck, leaving Lancashire eight wickets down. Matt Parkinson claimed his first wicket of the match by trapping Tom Aspinwall leg-before-wicket for 14. The match was wrapped up when James Anderson was caught and bowled by Foreman for 2, leaving the stranded Marcus Harris undefeated on a stellar 91 not out.
