Delhi Capitals IPL 2027: Players Likely to be Released After 2026 Season
A Season to Forget for the Delhi Capitals
The Delhi Capitals find themselves in a precarious position as the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) nears its conclusion. Occupying seventh place on the points table with only two league matches remaining, the team is staring at the reality of another missed playoff opportunity. This trend of underperformance has become alarmingly familiar, as the franchise has not reached the knockout stages since 2021. For a team that once enjoyed a successful run between 2019 and 2021, the current five-year drought feels uncomfortably similar to the dark days of the Delhi Daredevils era.
Reports indicate that internal pressure is mounting, with both captain Axar Patel and the coaching staff facing intense scrutiny regarding their leadership and lack of consistent team selection. With the 2027 season on the horizon, a significant clear-out appears inevitable. Below, we identify the individuals who are most likely to be released by the franchise.
Ben Duckett: The Premature Exit
Ben Duckett’s situation is the most straightforward of all. Purchased at his base price of INR 2 crore, Duckett opted out of the 2026 season to prioritize his Test cricket career in England. Under current IPL regulations, a player who withdraws after the auction faces a two-year ban. Consequently, Duckett will be unavailable for both 2027 and 2028, effectively ending his current stint with the Capitals before it even began.
Karun Nair: Failing to Find Consistency
Karun Nair’s second tenure with Delhi began with a glimmer of hope. In 2025, his explosive 89 off 40 balls against the Mumbai Indians suggested a return to form. However, that performance proved to be an anomaly. With a meager 18 runs in two matches this year and a strike rate of 100, the veteran has struggled to cement his place in an already overcrowded top order.
Pathum Nissanka: High Expectations, Low Returns
After a standout performance at the T20 World Cup, much was expected of Pathum Nissanka. While he managed two fifties in ten matches, his total tally of 278 runs at an average of 28 is simply not enough for an overseas specialist. With local talents like Prithvi Shaw, Nitish Rana, and Abhishek Porel pushing for spots, the Capitals are expected to look for more reliable options in the batting lineup.
The Specialists: Nigam and Jamieson
The squad’s bowling depth has also come under fire. UP leg-spinner Nigam, who impressed in his debut, has been largely ineffective this season, taking only two wickets in five matches at a staggering economy rate of 12.55. With the team possessing established spinners like Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel, Nigam appears to be surplus to requirements.
Similarly, New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson has struggled to make an impact. With only two wickets in two matches and an economy of 12.85, Jamieson has failed to justify his price tag. Given the presence of seasoned international bowlers like Mitchell Starc and Lungi Ngidi, it is highly likely the franchise will seek a more economical replacement.
The Youth Gamble: Parakh
Finally, the 18-year-old batter from Maharashtra, Parakh, has found the jump to the IPL level challenging. With only two T20 matches of experience prior to his call-up, he was thrust into high-pressure situations against elite bowling attacks. While he showed occasional flashes, the extreme competition for spots in the Delhi batting order means Parakh is likely to be among the first players released as the franchise looks to rebuild.
As the Delhi Capitals prepare for the future, the upcoming off-season will be critical. The management must address these personnel issues if they hope to return to the competitive heights of their 2019–2021 glory days.
