Fitness Concerns and Selection Pressure
This dialogue regarding Pandya’s durability took center stage during a recent selection meeting aimed at finalizing the squad for India’s upcoming international fixtures, including the series against Afghanistan. While Pandya was included in the squad, his selection arrived with a significant caveat: his participation is strictly contingent upon his ability to prove his fitness beyond any reasonable doubt. The root of this concern lies in Pandya’s recent history with injuries. It is worth noting that Pandya has not featured in red-ball cricket for India—or even at the domestic level—since 2018. A senior BCCI source highlighted that the core anxiety for the selection committee is Pandya’s utility as a genuine pace-bowling all-rounder. “The selectors are only worried about him not bowling 10 overs,” the source noted. Despite training at private facilities, the lack of competitive overs under the supervision of the national board has left the selectors hesitant. This skepticism is intensified by the fact that he remained sidelined for the Mumbai Indians for an extended period between May 2 and the selection meeting on May 19.
This is not the first time such concerns have surfaced. Earlier this year, in January, Pandya was rested from an ODI series against New Zealand to protect him for the T20 World Cup. Although the CoE had not cleared him to bowl 10 overs at that time, he subsequently proved his capabilities by bowling a full spell for Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, highlighting a disconnect between his personal fitness management and the official BCCI protocol.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa on the horizon, the BCCI is evidently shifting its focus toward building a sustainable pool of players who can provide balance to the side. The selectors are reportedly casting their net wider, with young talents like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana being identified as potential long-term successors to fill the crucial role of the pace-bowling all-rounder.
