Learoyd, Luff make light work of depleted Warwickshire

A Dominant Display at Edgbaston

Somerset claimed their maiden victory of the 2026 Women’s Vitality Blast in emphatic fashion, dismantling the Warwickshire Bears at Edgbaston with a seven-wicket win. The result marks a challenging start for the Bears, who have now suffered consecutive defeats to open their campaign, while Somerset will be buoyed by a clinical performance from their top-order batters.

Warwickshire Struggles Under Pressure

Choosing to bat first, Warwickshire found themselves significantly hampered by the absence of six key players due to injury and international commitments. Despite a bright start from openers Meg Austin and Abi Freeborn, who raced to 34 runs in the opening three overs, the momentum soon stalled. Freeborn was dismissed early, chipping a delivery from Olivia Barnes to extra cover, which brought Georgia Redmayne to the crease.

Redmayne and Austin put together a useful partnership of 47 runs off 34 balls, but a communication breakdown led to a disastrous run-out that left Austin stranded after scoring 41 off 29 balls. From that moment, the innings lost its rhythm. Redmayne followed shortly after, castled by a precise yorker from Niamh Holland for 30. Although Amu Surenkumar provided a brief moment of brilliance—striking the game’s first six over long-off—her dismissal by Erin Vukusic signaled a decline in scoring rate.

Vukusic, who recovered exceptionally well after conceding 17 runs in her first over, finished with impressive figures of 3 for 32. Supported by Niamh Holland, who claimed 2 for 23, Somerset stifled the Warwickshire middle and lower order, leaving the hosts to finish at a well-below-par 166 for 9.

The Somerset Response

The Somerset chase began with a stroke of luck. In a dramatic opening over from Alexa Stonehouse, Rebecca Odgers was dropped at point, and Sophie Luff was caught at extra cover off a no-ball. These reprieves proved costly for the Bears. While Odgers fell shortly after to Phoebe Brett, Luff seized the opportunity with both hands.

Luff was in imperious form, finding the gaps with ease throughout the powerplay. She reached her half-century in just 27 balls, anchoring the innings with a fluidity that took the game away from the depleted Warwickshire attack. Alongside Anika Learoyd, who continued her stellar run of form by scoring her second consecutive half-century, Luff put together a match-defining stand of 84 runs in only 51 balls.

Closing the Gap

Although Luff was eventually dismissed by Georgia Davis while attempting a reverse sweep, the damage was done. Learoyd, who finished unbeaten on 60 from 49 balls, found a composed partner in Niamh Holland. The duo added a quick-fire 35 runs in 21 balls, guiding Somerset to their target of 167 with ten balls to spare.

This win serves as a major confidence booster for Somerset. For Warwickshire, the challenge remains clear: they must find a way to stabilize their lineup and improve their decision-making in the field if they are to turn their campaign around in the coming rounds. The lack of senior personnel was apparent today, but credit must go to Somerset for their disciplined bowling and aggressive, organized batting performance.
