Sanju Samson Emerges as Leading Candidate for India’s Next T20 Captaincy
A New Chapter for Indian T20 Cricket
As India sets its sights on the T20 World Cup 2028 after a triumphant 2026 campaign on home soil, the conversation surrounding the leadership of the Men in Blue has intensified. Former head coach Ravi Shastri, a trusted confidant of Virat Kohli, has publicly endorsed Sanju Samson as the natural successor to the current T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav.

The Rise of Sanju Samson
Sanju Samson’s journey to becoming a potential captaincy candidate has been defined by his explosive batting and newfound maturity at the crease. During the 2026 T20 World Cup, Samson was instrumental in India’s success, most notably in the high-stakes encounter against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, where he helped propel the team into the semi-finals. His tournament statistics were staggering: 321 runs in just five appearances, maintaining a remarkable average of 80.25 and a blistering strike rate of 199.37.
While Sahibzada Farhan ended the tournament as the highest run-scorer, it was Samson’s sheer consistency and his ability to anchor the innings under extreme pressure that earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
Ravi Shastri’s Strategic Vision
Speaking on The ICC Review, Ravi Shastri emphasized that while Suryakumar Yadav currently holds the reins, the future direction of the team will depend on performance trends over the next two years. Shastri noted that Samson has already proven his mettle as a leader, specifically citing his experience at the helm of the Rajasthan Royals and his current stellar form for the Chennai Super Kings in the 2026 IPL.
“India, come the next T20 World Cup, might be looking for a new captain, depending on how Surya goes over the next couple of years,” Shastri explained. “But Sanju Samson has put himself there for a leadership role. He is a certainty in the side, at the top of the order, and is extremely destructive. I see this as the start of something more from Sanju.”
Addressing the Skeptics
Historically, consistency has been the primary hurdle in Samson’s career. However, Shastri believes those concerns are now relics of the past. Although Samson experienced a slow start in the T20 World Cup, his turnaround—including a match-winning 97 against the West Indies—demonstrated a level of mental fortitude previously unseen. This transformation has carried over into the IPL, where he overcame early single-digit scores to eventually notch a dominant 115 against the Delhi Capitals.
Shastri noted, “I think he has put a lid on all those question marks. There was always ability, but the way he stepped up in big games and the maturity he is showing now makes him a clear case for leadership in the future.”
Why Iyer and Pandya Are Falling Behind
The path to the captaincy appears to be closing for both Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya. Shreyas Iyer has struggled to regain a foothold in the national setup, exacerbated by his exclusion from the latest BCCI contract list. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya’s aspirations are hindered by a history of chronic injury issues and inconsistent form, making him an unlikely choice for the captaincy in either white-ball format moving forward.
With the landscape of Indian cricket shifting, the backing from a figure as influential as Ravi Shastri suggests that the selectors may be looking for a fresh, reliable, and destructive leader. As Samson continues to lead the charge in domestic leagues, his transformation from a talented prospect to a seasoned leader seems to be reaching its zenith.
