Shreyas Iyer‘s Masterclass Resurrects Punjab Kings

In a high-stakes encounter at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Punjab Kings (PBKS) pulled off a spectacular chase to keep their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive. Entering the contest on the back of six consecutive defeats, the pressure was immense on captain Shreyas Iyer and his team. However, the skipper rose to the occasion, hammering his maiden IPL century to guide his side to an emphatic seven-wicket victory over the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

Chasing a challenging target of 197, PBKS paced their innings beautifully to cross the finish line in just 18 overs. The victory lifts Punjab Kings to 15 points from their 14 league stage matches, setting up a dramatic finish to the group stage as they await other results to determine their postseason fate.

The Run Chase: Early Blows and a Costly Reprieve

The visiting team’s chase got off to a rocky start. Lucknow’s premier pacer, Mohammed Shami, struck early to dismantle the PBKS top order. Shami removed opener Priyansh Arya for a duck and shortly after dismissed Cooper Connolly for 18, putting Punjab on the back foot at 27 for 2.

The momentum of the game, however, shifted dramatically due to a crucial missed opportunity. In the first over of debutant Arjun Tendulkar’s IPL spell, LSG wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant dropped a relatively straightforward catch of Prabhsimran Singh. It proved to be a costly error as Prabhsimran capitalised on the life, launching a counter-attack alongside his captain.Prabhsimran went on to smash a brilliant 69 runs off just 39 deliveries, an innings laced with 7 boundaries and 2 sixes. He was eventually dismissed by debutant Arjun Tendulkar in his third over, giving the young bowler his maiden IPL wicket, but by then, the platform for a successful chase had been firmly established.

Iyer’s Century of Perfection

With Prabhsimran providing the early fireworks, Shreyas Iyer played the anchor-turned-aggressor role to perfection. The PBKS captain looked in sublime touch from the outset, finding gaps with surgical precision and clearing the boundary with ease. Iyer brought up his historic maiden IPL century in style, remaining unbeaten on 101 off just 51 balls. His sensational knock featured 11 fours and 5 towering sixes, completely deflating the Lucknow bowling attack and ensuring there were no late hiccups in the chase.

LSG Innings: Inglis and Badoni Propel the Hosts to 196

Earlier in the evening, after being put in to bat, the Lucknow Super Giants posted a robust total of 196 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. LSG’s innings got off to a shaky start as opener Arshin Kulkarni was dismissed for a duck, and the dangerous Nicholas Pooran could only manage 2 runs before heading back to the pavilion.

However, Australian batsman Josh Inglis steadied the ship with a classy 72 off 44 balls, anchoring the middle overs with 9 fours and 2 sixes. The real impetus to the innings came from Ayush Badoni, who played a breathtaking cameo. Badoni blasted 43 runs off just 18 deliveries, including 5 boundaries and 3 sixes, at a strike rate of nearly 240.

Rishabh Pant chipped in with a steady 26 off 22 balls, while Abdul Samad provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 37 off 20 balls (3 fours and 3 sixes) to take LSG close to the 200-run mark. For Punjab Kings, Marco Jansen (2/38) and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/41) were the pick of the bowlers, while Shashank Singh and Azmatullah Omarzai picked up one wicket apiece.

The Playoff Equation: What Punjab Kings Need to Qualify

With their league stage matches completed, Punjab Kings sit on 15 points. Their destiny is no longer entirely in their own hands, and they will be closely monitoring the upcoming fixtures of their rivals.

  • The Wankhede Decider: If the Rajasthan Royals defeat the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on May 24, Punjab Kings will be officially eliminated from the playoff race.
  • The KKR vs DC Factor: Should Mumbai Indians win, PBKS’ fate will then rest on the clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Delhi Capitals (DC).
  • Net Run Rate Battle: A victory for KKR in that match would tie them with Punjab Kings on 15 points, meaning the final playoff spot would be decided strictly by Net Run Rate (NRR).

While the qualification math remains complex, Shreyas Iyer’s spectacular century has at least given Punjab Kings a fighting chance and restored pride after a difficult run of form in the latter half of the tournament.
