A Gesture of Gratitude for Sylhet’s Ground Staff

In the world of cricket, the spotlight often remains firmly on the players, coaches, and administrators. However, the backbone of any successful sporting facility lies in the tireless, often invisible efforts of the ground staff. Recognizing this, a heartfelt initiative was recently launched in Sylhet, where former cricketers and sports organizers joined hands to provide Eid gifts worth BDT 100,000 to the dedicated workers of the Sylhet District Sports Association.

Honoring the Unseen Heroes

The initiative, which has garnered widespread praise across the local sports community, serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of recognizing those who maintain the playing surfaces and facilities. By providing these gifts, the organizers aimed to not only support the workers during the festive season but also to validate their crucial contribution to the sport.

Distinguished Attendees Show Support

The event was graced by notable figures in the community, reflecting the significance of the cause. Among those present were former Bangladesh national cricket team captain Rajin Saleh and Syed Fazla Elahi Obhi, an executive committee member of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association. The gathering also included several prominent figures from the local cricket scene, such as:

  • Kabir Ahmed, Secretary, Sylhet First Division Cricket League
  • Khubeb Ahmed, Vice President, Sylhet First Division Cricket League
  • Evan Chowdhury, Joint Secretary, Sylhet First Division Cricket League
  • Rana Mia, Sylhet District Cricket Coach

Reflections from the Heart

During the program, Syed Fazla Elahi Obhi highlighted the necessity of such gestures, stating, “Ground workers quietly play a very important role in keeping sports facilities and activities running smoothly. This initiative is our way of recognizing their contribution and sharing the joy of Eid with them.”

For Rajin Saleh, the connection to the ground staff is deeply personal. Reflecting on his own career, the former captain shared, “My cricket journey started from this very ground. Because of that, many of the ground workers feel like family to me. My connection with them is not only through cricket, but also from the heart.”

Kabir Ahmed reiterated the long-term commitment of the organization, noting, “Since the beginning of the league, we promised to give ground workers the respect they truly deserve. This initiative is part of continuing that commitment.”

A Culture of Appreciation

The success of this initiative signals a positive shift in how sporting organizations treat their support staff. By treating ground workers with dignity and including them in the festivities of Eid, the Sylhet sporting community has set a commendable precedent. It is a testament to the idea that the spirit of cricket extends far beyond the boundary line, encompassing the people who build, maintain, and sustain the environments where dreams are nurtured. As the community continues to grow, such efforts ensure that the fabric of local cricket remains strong, inclusive, and grounded in mutual respect.

This initiative not only provided practical relief but also fostered a sense of belonging and appreciation, proving that even small acts of kindness can have a profound impact on the morale and unity of a community.
