Bangladesh recall Mosaddek after four years for ODIs against Australia

A Tactical Shift for the Tigers

As the cricketing world turns its attention to the upcoming clash in Mirpur, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has made a decisive move to revitalize its ODI setup. The most notable headline from the latest squad announcement is that Bangladesh recall Mosaddek after four years for ODIs against Australia, signaling a clear intent to reinforce the middle-order with experience and proven domestic form.

The 30-year-old Mosaddek Hossain, who last appeared in the ODI format in August 2022, returns to the national fold following a stellar run in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL). His inclusion is not merely sentimental; it is a calculated response to the middle-order fragility that has plagued the team in recent series against Pakistan and New Zealand.

The Case for Mosaddek and Nurul

Chief selector Habibul Bashar highlighted the reasoning behind these changes. Mosaddek’s DPL campaign has been nothing short of extraordinary, boasting an average of 89 across five matches, complemented by a century and two fifties. Beyond his batting prowess, his ability to provide useful off-spin overs makes him a balanced asset for the team. Bashar noted that the selectors believe Mosaddek is well-suited for the No. 6 position, providing the team with much-needed stability.

Alongside Mosaddek, wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan has also earned a recall. Nurul replaces Mahidul Islam, as the team management felt that Mahidul’s natural top-order style did not mesh well with the specific needs of the lower-middle order. By bringing in Nurul, Bangladesh is looking for a specialist who understands the demands of batting at No. 6 or 7, particularly during the critical death overs.

Addressing the Batting Woes

The urgency of these changes stems from a consistent struggle in the batting department. While the likes of Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto have shown flashes of brilliance, the team as a whole has failed to build partnerships regularly. The struggles of Saif Hassan and Towhid Hridoy, combined with captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s dip in batting form, have placed immense pressure on the bowling unit to defend modest totals.

The departure of Afif Hossain and Mahidul Islam from the squad suggests that the coaching staff is eager to move away from experimental lineups and toward a more reliable combination. As Bashar admitted, the lack of consistent opportunities for the outgoing players made this a difficult but necessary tactical pivot.

The Bowling Attack and Historical Context

While the batting remains a work in progress, Bangladesh’s bowling depth remains a potent threat. The squad features a formidable pace battery including Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam, and the rising sensation Nahid Rana, who has impressed with five-wicket hauls in both Tests and ODIs since March. Additionally, leg-spinner Rishad Hossain brings valuable insight into the Australian players’ habits, having competed in the Big Bash League (BBL) last season.

This series carries significant historical weight, marking the first time in fifteen years that Bangladesh will host Australia for a bilateral ODI series. With Bangladesh’s only historical ODI win against the Australians dating back to 2005 in Cardiff, the local side will be desperate to make a statement in front of their home crowd.

Bangladesh Squad for the First Two ODIs

The selectors have finalized a 15-member squad tasked with setting the tone for the series:

  • Captain: Mehidy Hasan Miraz
  • Top/Middle Order: Soumya Sarkar, Saif Hassan, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tawhid Hridoy
  • Wicketkeepers: Litton Das, Nurul Hasan
  • All-Rounders: Mosaddek Hossain, Rishad Hossain
  • Bowlers: Tanvir Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Nahid Rana
