Clarke and Guthrie Guide Northants to 465
Resuming on 380 for 7, Northamptonshire looked to post a formidable first-innings score on day two of the Rothesay County Championship clash at the cinch County Ground, Wantage Road. James Sales quickly reached his half-century but fell shortly after for 50, caught behind down the leg side by a leaping James Bracey off the bowling of Kristian Clarke. Clarke, the New Zealand international, enjoyed a memorable debut, claiming stellar figures of 6 for 109.
However, the Northants tail refused to surrender easily. Liam Guthrie played a stunning counter-attacking innings, smashing 52 runs off just 50 deliveries to secure his highest first-class score. Guthrie found excellent support from Australian bowler Harry Conway, and together they frustrated Gloucestershire with a 70-run partnership for the ninth wicket. Conway contributed a patient 21 runs before Jack Taylor swept in to claim the final two wickets, leaving Northants all out for 465.
Gloucestershire Suffer Early Top-Order Collapse
Gloucestershire’s reply got off to a slow start, reaching 15 without loss at lunch. But the post-lunch session quickly turned sour as Northamptonshire’s bowling attack exploited the conditions. Skipper Luke Procter bowled an incredibly tight spell, giving away just five runs in six overs, including four maidens. Procter broke the opening stand by trapping Joe Phillips lbw, before inducing an edge to Ricardo Vasconcelos behind the stumps.
The pressure intensified when young paceman Raphy Weatherall struck in his first over, dismissing Cameron Bancroft lbw with a low-pointing delivery that nipped back. Although Miles Hammond showed some resistance with a boundary off Guthrie, he was soon trapped lbw trying to play a straight ball to the leg side. Guthrie struck again in his next over, getting Tommy Boorman caught behind to leave Gloucestershire reeling at 56 for 4.
The Great Escape: Bracey and van Buuren Build Resolute Stand
With their side facing a massive deficit and staring down the barrel, captain Graeme van Buuren and wicketkeeper James Bracey united for a match-defining partnership. While the Northampton Carnival paraded outside the ground, the duo focused on pure survival, slowly steadying the ship. They added 62 runs before tea, slowly wearing down the Northants attack.
After the tea interval, the batting conditions eased, and the runs began to flow. Bracey brought up his half-century in style, driving Harrison through mid-off to celebrate a brilliant century partnership. Van Buuren survived a drop at short midwicket and multiple caught-behind appeals but fought on to bring up his own half-century. Bracey then accelerated, pulling Sales for two massive sixes, the second of which cleared the stadium entirely.
Late Wicket Dampens the Fightback
Against the run of play, Northants finally broke the 148-run stand when Sales found an edge off Bracey (72), which was safely taken by Justin Broad at slip. Despite the late blow, van Buuren remained unbeaten on 75 alongside Jack Taylor, guiding Gloucestershire to 233 for 5 at stumps. Gloucestershire still trail by 232 runs, but the resilience shown by their middle order has kept them firmly in the hunt.
