An ICC delegation visits Bangladesh to ‘review developments linked to the BCB amid a period of significant administrative transition and legal battles surrounding the country’s cricket governing body. The two-member delegation, consisting of ICC directors Dr Mohammed Moosajee and Tavengwa Mukuhlani, arrived in Dhaka on June 1 to assess the ongoing developments and report their findings back to the International Cricket Council’s main governing body.

The Purpose of the ICC Delegation’s Visit

According to an official media release from the ICC, directors Dr Mohammed Moosajee and Tavengwa Mukuhlani engaged with a wide range of stakeholders during their brief stay in Dhaka. The primary objective of their visit was to review the complex administrative developments linked to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). This review comes at a critical juncture, with the BCB’s board elections scheduled to take place on June 7.

Upon their arrival on June 1, the delegation immediately commenced a series of high-level meetings. They met with members of the newly formed BCB ad-hoc committee, which is currently led by former Bangladesh captain and newly appointed president Tamim Iqbal. In addition to the ad-hoc committee, the ICC directors also held discussions with members of the BCB’s election commission to understand the preparation and framework established for the upcoming polls on June 7.

Engaging with Resigned and Current Directors

To gain a comprehensive understanding of the situation, the ICC delegation did not limit their discussions to current administrators. Reports indicate that Moosajee and Mukuhlani also met with several BCB directors who had resigned from the previous board. This allowed the governing body’s representatives to hear diverse perspectives on the events leading up to the current administrative structure.

Furthermore, a separate meeting took place on June 2 involving directors who had chosen not to resign from their positions. Among this group were Asif Akbar and Ahsan Iqbal Chowdhury, who presented their views to the visiting ICC delegation. These meetings highlight the deeply divided nature of the board’s leadership following recent governmental interventions.

Aminul Islam Challenges the Election’s Legitimacy

Following these interactions, Aminul Islam, the former Bangladesh captain who served as the BCB president until April, made strong statements regarding the political and administrative state of the board. Aminul, who still considers himself the rightful president of the BCB, claimed that his faction urged the ICC delegation not to recognize any election conducted by or under the authority of the current ad-hoc committee, whether on June 7 or at any future date.

Aminul also asserted that the BCB’s ad-hoc committee must correct their press release issued on May 31 regarding the nature of the ICC delegation’s visit to Bangladesh. His public stance emphasizes the friction between the dissolved board members and the newly appointed ad-hoc management, creating a tense atmosphere ahead of the scheduled elections.

High Court Dismisses Petition Challenging the June 7 Polls

Parallel to the ICC’s visit, a crucial legal battle unfolded in the domestic courts. Bangladesh’s High Court rejected a writ petition that directly challenged the legality of the upcoming BCB election schedule and the compiled voter list. The bench, comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice Md Ashif Hasan, officially passed the rejection order, stating that the petition was not presented properly before the court.

This legal challenge was originally filed on May 18, just over a month after the country’s sports ministry took the decisive action to dissolve the BCB’s board of directors on April 7. Following the dissolution, the ministry had immediately appointed an 11-member ad-hoc committee, spearheaded by Tamim Iqbal, to manage the transition and oversee the organization of the new elections.

The Road Ahead for Bangladesh Cricket Administration

The outcomes of the ICC delegation’s visit and the upcoming June 7 elections will undoubtedly shape the future of cricket governance in Bangladesh. As the ad-hoc committee led by Tamim Iqbal prepares to conduct the polls, the findings reported by Dr Moosajee and Mukuhlani to the ICC will be crucial in determining how the international body views the legitimacy of the new leadership. With the High Court clearing the legal hurdles for now, all eyes remain on Dhaka as the June 7 election approaches.
